Split is by far the biggest town on the coast of the Adriatic Sea. It attracts tourists all year round and, as you’d expect, there are now many hostels offering good accommodation at low prices.
I was expecting Split to be more expensive than it was. The hostels were more than reasonably priced (though I did visit in the low season). If possible, try to stay around the old town within Diocletian’s Palace.
Arriving In Split
I travelled from Zadar by bus. Once again, I used the Get By Bus web site meaning my ticket was electronic, saving the hassle of having to print.
The journey took around 4 1/2 hours and the bus dropped me at the main bus station in Split (map) which is just a few minutes walk from the old town.

Downtown Hostel
I chose to stay at ‘Downtown Hostel’ (map) as it was located in the old town and was amongst the cheapest available. The hostel sent me directions before I arrived but I didn’t expect to need them as that’s what Google Maps is for.
It turned out that the email did come in handy as Google Maps was not successful in this instance. I had clearly not taken into account how much of a maze the old town is!
I got checked in quickly and was put in a 8-bed dorm, not the 4-bed dorm I had booked. The receptionist explained they had overbooked but “there’ll only be 4 people in the room”. I had a locker and a power socket, which are the essentials for any dorm room, so I didn’t mind. I did discover that everyone else in the room had paid for an 8-bed dorm so I was paying extra for nothing, which annoyed me slightly.
The WiFi in the hostel was good and there was a small kitchen, though it could have done with a bit of a clean and a few more amenities. The bathroom was fine but not the most private.
The biggest plus points for this hostel were its location and the balcony. It was nice sitting and chatting with other travellers over the streets below.
