Budget Travel in Hungary

Breathtaking landscapes, thermal spas, hearty food and the largest lake in central Europe ensure that travel in Hungary has something for every traveler. Outside the capital you will discover friendly people, cheap living costs and stunning historic towns.

I began my Hungarian travels in the capital city of Budapest, having caught a Flixbus from Bratislava, Slovakia. It was already dark by the time I reached the centre of the city but I immediately knew I would love the city. It already felt alive. Seeing the castle and the bridges lit up over the Danube was a truly magical introduction to this wonderful city.

Over the next few days, I discovered most of the city’s attractions and found the city to be truly wonderful. The architecture, the parks, the castles, the spas and the ruin bars all made up for an incredible experience. My time in Hungary had got off to a great start.

Budapest is one of the most exciting cities to visit in Europe, but Hungary has so much more to offer. From the capital, I headed towards Lake Balaton, staying in a tiny town called Heviz. Famous for its thermal lake, it couldn’t have been any more different to Budapest. It’s a lovely little town and from here I enjoyed taking a bicycle ride along Lake Balaton, taking in other small towns.

Pecs was my last stop in Hungary before I moved on to Croatia. Much smaller than Budapest but with a multicultural population, it was a charming place to spend my last few days.
