As you would expect in such a popular tourist resort, there is no shortage of bars and restaurants located around the centre of Split.
From cheap, fast-food cafes to high quality restaurants, every budget is catered for. As I was travelling on a low budget, I took advantage of the many ‘pekara’ shops that sell warm, delicious burek and pizza for around one Euro. Burek is a thin, flaky, baked pastry with a choice of fillings such as ground beef, cheese or potato. They are a popular, traditional snack and a cheap way to satisfy any hunger.

Ready Made Food For Budget Travel
If you are travelling on a budget, check out the local Spar markets for ready-made food. They usually have a small selection of cooked meats, fish and vegetables as well as a range of sides. Perfect for tourists staying in hostels with limited cooking facilities.
Supermarkets are also a good place to stock up on alcohol as most sell reasonably priced local wine and beer comes in 2 litre bottles!
I ate on a budget in Split and so didn’t really visit any restaurants. I did, however, visit some of the bars in the centre.
Food And Drink In Split
Black Dog Craft Bar
Craft beer is starting to become popular in the Balkans and ‘Black Dog Craft Bar’ (map) is a great place to try local brews. They had about 8 beers on tap including wheat beer, IPA, APA, etc. I had a great time sampling a sizable portion of their menu and chatting with a couple of English travellers.
Bobis – Zvoncac
Situated away from the old town, I visited here after spending the day in Marjan Park. It was a nice place to stop and rest my legs after a long hike and enjoy the great coffee and cake. They have lots of outdoor seating so it’s perfect on a summer’s day. Map.
Charlie’s Bar
Describing itself as a ‘backpackers bar’. ‘Charlie’s Bar’ (map) is a small but friendly place deep in the heart of the old town. On my first visit, there was just a couple of people in but it soon livened up with the arrival of a group of local girls who danced and sang to every song the DJ played. I visited here three nights out of four. The beer is cheap, the music is good and the staff are friendly.
Kantun Paulina
I came here late one night as I realised I hadn’t eaten for hours and it was getting quite late. Not wanting the usual late night, fast-food options, I found this place on Google Maps and it seemed to offer something of a better quality. It was a great find as the ‘sausage burger’ was delicious, as was the homemade tomato relish that came with it. Map.
Marvlvs Library Jazz Bar
Quirky bar in the old town with a relaxed vibe. The decor is great with books everywhere. The drinks menu itself would take a full day to read! I arrived quite late and there was no live music. No beer sold here, only Guiness which is not cheap. Map.
