Sukhothai is famous for the Sukhothai Historical Park. There are many hostels catering for the budget traveller.

Most accommodation in Sukhothai is located in the new town. From here, you can take a cheap bus to visit Sukhothai Historical Park.

These are some of the best hostels in Sukhothai, according to user reviews. These are affiliate links to the Agoda web site. I found Agoda to be much better than booking.com in Southeast Asia. I receive a small amount for any bookings made through these links at no extra cost to you.

Ruengsrisiri Guesthouse

We arrived at Sukhothai bus station at just before 4 pm. Conveniently, our hostel ‘Ruengsrisiri Guesthouse’ (map) was so close, we could actually see it before we departed the station.

Check-in was easy and within no time we were in our room. The room was very hot and, with no air-con, we had to rely on the fairly noisy fan to keep cool. The room had interesting decor; it seemed like the guesthouse was going for a 70s retro vibe. Or maybe that’s the last time it was decorated. The bed was hard as rock, as were the pillows. The bathroom was a bit grotty and had lizard droppings on the surfaces. It really could have done with a better clean. There was also no flush, meaning we had to use a bucket of water. The towels were also very odd, made out of a weird, stretchy material that seemed to be waterproof! The WiFi was also very frustrating; sometimes cutting out completely in the room, although it was better in the communal areas.

On the plus side, you can have your room changed daily if needed and they do have two good communal areas: one near the reception in the courtyard where you can sit and enjoy a drink, and another on the roof where you can laze around on a hammock. The private room with our own bathroom only costs £5 and for that price, we couldn’t really complain. Dorms are also available.

How To Get To Sukhothai New Town

Whilst a stone throw away from the bus station, the hostel is located neither in the new town or the old town. Unlike Ayutthaya, where the ancient ruins are in the centre of the actual town, Sukhothai Historical Park is 12 km west of the new town. The new town is also a good 15 minutes walk away from the hotel. Do not use google maps to get into the new town. There is a dirt track behind the hostel that leads you a bridge that leads straight to the main road into the new town, saving you around 20 minutes walking. Follow the signs for the night market, then cross the bridge that has the blue Thai sign over it.

I am sure there are better hostels in Sukhothai, but this was very cheap and, despite the obvious improvements that would make a big difference, it was OK for a short stay and very convenient if travelling in and out of the city by bus.

Beware Of The Dogs

On our first night, we decided to walk into town, have some food and have an early night. We had heard about the trail into town but was a little disturbed by some of the comments about aggressive dogs. The hotel receptionist ensured us we’d be OK and there was “only a couple” on the dirt track. However, the sign did not convince us she was being totally honest.

Oh heck!

Oh heck!

Thankfully, despite coming across a number of dogs on the way into town and back, none seemed aggressive.
