There are many hostels in Phitsanulok to accommodate those travelling on a low budget.

Arriving In Phitsanulok

Pulling into the bus station at Phitsanulok, we got an instant feeling this was going to be a more lively few days than our time in Sukhothai. It was chaotic and busy, with tuktuks and street food vendors fighting for space! I had a feeling we would enjoy our time here.

These are some of the best budget hostels in Phitsanulok, according to user reviews. These are affiliate links to the Agoda web site. I found Agoda to be much better than booking.com in Southeast Asia. I receive a small amount for any bookings made through these links at no extra cost to you.

Karma Hostel

From the bus station, it was approximately a 20 minute walk to our hostel: ‘Karma Hostel’. A tuktuk would have cost 60 baht but… we like to walk! I enjoy discovering the local area around the place we are staying in before we arrive, if its not too far to walk. On the way, we spotted a couple of food places that I wanted to check out which were close to our hostel. It’s very hard to get lost when you use google maps, but we soon discovered our hostel was signposted anyway.

A good sign.

We found the hostel open, but unattended. People in Thailand leave everything unattended. This was something that we still hadn’t got our heads around yet. When we left our bags before check in at many hostels, they just leave them in the reception which always worried us at first. And here was a hostel with a fridge full of beer, a laptop, ukulele, a pot of money, and various items for sale on the counter and the place was just open and unattended! It’s as if there is no theft in Thailand! We called the owner who said he’d be there in 10 minutes so we had a look around the reception.

We had heard great things about this place and also about the owner, Mark. Within 10 minutes, Mark arrived and he immediately gave us some tips on places to see in Phitsanulok. He explained that the room was not ready as the previous occupants didn’t arrive until 3 AM and had not left yet. There was no real check out/check in time at this hostel; it was all very laid back. Mark also told us to help ourselves to drinks and to just place money in the pot. We could also take our deposit from the pot when we leave, should he not be there to give it to us. TOTALLY chilled out! 🙂 He told us that he liked to go out for dinner with his guests and they’d be doing so that night, should we wish to join. Wonderful!

After a short wander around the city, we headed back to the hostel and our room was ready for us. The room was nice, the air-con was great and the WiFi was as good as we’d had so far in Thailand.

The hostel also had a great rooftop area.

If you are ever in Phitsanulok and looking for a cheap, social hostel, you really won’t do any better than this place. It was one of the best hostels on our trip so far. Having a host like Mark really makes a difference. This was also true of the ‘Like Home’ hostel in Chiang Mai. As Mark said, “You arrive as a customer and you leave as a friend.”
