Known as ‘Ha Long Bay on land’, Ninh Binh is often overlooked by travellers. It offers an authentic look at everyday life in Vietnam and is surrounded by incredible natural landscapes. These are the best hostels in Ninh Binh.
We only visited Ninh Binh to break up our journey from Cat Ba to Hue. A fellow traveller told us that Ninh Binh was his favourite place in Vietnam so we decided to spend three nights here.

Ninh Binh Central Backpackers’ Hostel
When looking to book in advance, there were two places that we narrowed our search down to: Ninh Binh Brothers’ Hostel and ‘Ninh Binh Central Backpackers’ Hostel’ (map). We chose the latter and it turned out to be a good choice. The rooms were excellent: comfy beds, hot showers, clean bathroom, TV and good toiletries. The WiFi was strong and they provided a laundry service, free breakfast and free bicycles (though we had to rent from elsewhere as the bikes were already booked).
There were two reasons what made this place stand out. The first being that it had a bar. There is no such thing as Ninh Binh nightlife, other than karaoke bars. You need to go to restaurants to drink which is not really the same. Having a bar in the hostel meant it was a great place to meet fellow backpackers. The bar had a free pool table and table football plus other games. Beer was only 20,000 vnd.
The other reason why this was an exceptional hostel was the staff; in particular, the manager. He asked us what we’d been up to one day and when he heard how much we crammed in to one day, he said, “Wow, you’ve done a lot! Go have a shower and there’ll be a beer waiting for you in the bar, free of charge!” He also offered to take us to the station, though this proved impossible as the whole of Ninh Binh hit the roads to celebrate Vietnam reaching the last 8 of the Asia Cup.
It is these little extras that make a big difference. We loved our stay in this hostel and highly recommend it to other travellers.
