Best Hostels In Cat Ba Island – Budget Travel In Vietnam

Cat Ba is the largest island in the Ha Long Bay area of Vietnam. It is the perfect base to explore the ethereal beauty of Ha Long Bay’s limestone karsts.

We decided against an organised tour from Hanoi to experience Ha Long Bay. Instead, we took a minibus to Ha Long for one night and then took a local ferry across to Cat Ba island. We could not believe how cheap the accommodation was!

Cong Khanh

We couldn’t believe how cheap our accommodation was in Ha Long Bay, where we paid 198,000 vnd for one night in a very nice hotel. Cat Ba Island takes cheap accommodation to another level! As there were a number of options available at extremely low prices, we decided to book 3 nights at the absolute cheapest, just for the fun of it.

‘Cong Khanh’ (map) is located just up the road from the pier, about 5 minutes walk from the seafront. We paid just 150,000 vnd for three nights in a room which had two double beds and an en-suite bathroom! That’s £5. Or £2.50 each. Or 83p each a night! Surely, we thought, this must be a really bad place!

As it turned out, it was fine. The manager, Khanh, was a delight: very friendly and helpful. He even went to the effort to learn our names. The room was comfortable enough and the shower was hot. Towels were changed once whilst we were there.

£5 for 3 nights for 2 people!

There are some rough edges, sure. But for that price, you really cannot complain.  The biggest letdown was the WiFi, which was non-existent in our room but great signal literally outside the door.

We really did not expect the hotel to be as good as it was. We were made to feel very welcome. An excellent choice for those travelling on a budget. EDIT: The hotel is now called Napoli Hostel.
