Where To Stay In Krakow – Visit Krakow – Budget Travel In Poland

Facebookpinterestyoutubeinstagram

Krakow has accommodation to suit every budget and every type of traveller. Be aware of this so you don’t book a romantic break in a hostel full of stag parties!

To be fair, the drunken (usually British) stag crowds seem to have lessened in number over recent years but they are still there. If you wish to avoid these groups, make sure your hostel does not allow them before you book.

Where To Stay In Krakow

I would recommend staying within the ‘Stare Miasto’ area (map). The closer to either the main square or Kazimierz, the better. These are the two main spots in Krakow. Trams are cheap and frequent but the centre is small and flat so walking is easy.

Aparthotel Hello Halicka 5

Following my 12 months in Southeast Asia, I returned to Krakow and stayed at ‘Aparthotel Hello Halicka 5’ (map). These apartments were close to the Kazimierz area but at least 10 minutes walk from the main square. This was fine for me as I planned to spend more nights in Kazimierz.

The apartments were very clean and modern and had 24 hour access. The WiFi and showers both worked well. It was a little more expensive than I normally pay but, after a year in Southeast Asia, I fancied a little bit of luxury.

I had a good stay here. It is on a quiet street but just a minute walk to shops, bars and restaurants. My only complaint would be that I never had any room service in a 5 night stay.

I paid £138 for a 5 night stay in a double room with en suite bathroom.

Bison Hostel

I originally booked two nights at ‘Bison Hostel’ (map) but ended up extending my stay another two nights. The hostel is in a great location. On a quiet street but only minutes walk from the main square. The rooms were very big and each bed came with a locker and charging point/night light.

The WiFi was great and the shared showers were more than adequate. There was a big kitchen/social area with all the necessary amenities. I was surprised at how cheap it was!

I paid £25 for a 4 night stay in a 8 bed dorm with shared bathroom.

Smocza Jama Hostel

‘Smocza Jama Hostel’ (map) is a backpacker-friendly hostel in a good location as it is right in between the main square and Kazimierz. We only stayed here one night but we still got a good vibe about the place. The staff were friendly and we even had a private shower that we were not expecting.

Pergamin Old Town Apartments

‘Pergamin Old Town Apartments’ (map) seemed a little posher than what we were used to. It is ideally located between the main square and Kazimierz. The rooms were clean and modern and cleaned daily.

However, our stay was far from perfect. On our first night, we discovered one of the windows was broke and wouldn’t close. Because it was windy, the window was constantly banging, making it impossible to sleep. Our other option was opening it further which made the room very cold and noisy. We told the reception who taped it shut as a temporary fix. It meant the draught was gone, but not the noise.

Another complaint was that, on two occasions, we had no hot water, including the morning we had to leave. We notified the reception who said they’d notify the plumber but nothing happened before we had to leave, meaning I had to go without a shower. We didn’t receive any apology. It just goes to show that you don’t always get an improved service when you pay more!
