Things To Do In Nha Trang – Budget Travel In Vietnam

Visit Nha Trang, one of Vietnam’s top tourist destinations, to experience golden beaches and numerous seafood restaurants that line the promenade.

Nha Trang is a popular tourist destination, particularly for Russian travellers. I decided to bring Joanna here for a bit of luxury on her birthday. A holiday from travelling, if you will.

How To Get To Nha Trang From Da Nang

We had booked a sleeper train from Da Nang to Nha Trang. We arrived at Da Nang station to discover our train was delayed by six and a half hours! Luckily, we managed to transfer onto another train that was also delayed but only by 1 hour. We had to downgrade from a 4 berth to a 6 berth AND PAY for the privilege, but it did get us into Nha Trang train station at the time we had originally planned. Once again, we had a decent sleep on the train. I’m not sure where the horror stories come from. This was our second sleeper train in Vietnam and we had a decent sleep on both of them.

Ca Phe Tiffins

Ca Phe Tiffin (map) is a lovely coffee shop serving good coffee and cake. With its modern, airy atmosphere, it is definitely a place I could have spent more time in. We met an old friend for coffee here; the first familiar person I met in all of my travelling so far!

Nha Trang Beach

I had heard some negative reports of Nha Trang so I wasn’t expecting much from our short time in the city. Shortly after our arrival, we walked along Nha Trang beach. The beaches are immaculate. Nha Trang appeared to be the holiday destination that Da Nang is aspiring to be. The beaches are golden with, thankfully, no rubbish blowing around. There didn’t appear to be too many things to do in Nha Trang other than switch to holiday mode and eat, drink and laze around!

Nom Nom Restaurant

Nom Nom (map) offer a range of Vietnamese dishes as well as western favourites. We couldn’t decide which to go for but both of us kept looking at the platters. In the end, we decided to treat ourself. Joanna went for the seafood platter and I went with the meat. To say it was a lot of food is an understatement.

Did we manage to finish it? Of course we did 🙂 Nom Nom has a good reputation and it’s easy to see why. The food and service were great and the prices were reasonable. Highly recommended.

Sushi Kiwami Restaurant

On arriving at ‘Sushi Kiwami’ (map), we found a full restaurant. Luckily, we were told we would only have to wait 15 minutes so we sat outside the restaurant waiting for a table.

Once inside, we were sat at the counter, meaning we could watch the sushi being prepared. We ordered 3 platters and it arrived in minutes. The sashimi came first. It was fantastic. The fish was so fresh and easily up there with the best sushi I have ever had. The nigiri came with wasabi already in the rolls. This could quite easily have put me off as I am not a fan of wasabi but the balance was just right. It was delicious.

Tam Bun Thap Pa Spa

On our one and only full day in Nha Trang (Joanna’s birthday), I dragged us away from our wonderful hotel to Tam Bun Thap Ba Spa (map) for a morning or relaxation. We took a Grab to the spa as it is located out of the main city. On arrival, we changed into a swimming costume (provided) and headed for the mud baths. The mud was hot and had such a high salt content that you were able to float in it. I found it very relaxing but Joanna took a while to get used to it.

Then it was on to a short blast of hydrotherapy followed by relaxing in a jacuzzi. We then had half an hour in a hot mineral spring before spending some time drinking passion fruit smoothies around a heated pool. We also had a waterfall massage which felt great.

Tam Bun Thap Pa is a very well-maintained and beautiful spa. It was a great way to spend the morning relaxing.

Is Nha Trang Worth Visiting?

Forget the negative reports about Nha Trang. It has more to offer than just an amazing beach. As always, if you get away from the centre, you can find a lively local community and real Vietnamese street food. We had some great food here and enjoyed a relaxing day at the natural spa. Yes, we lived in luxury compared to our usual travel experiences, but it can also easily be enjoyed on any budget.
