Trains from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi leave fromĀ Thornburi Station. This means you may have to use a public river boat as the station is to the west side of the Chao Phraya River.
Using The Public River Boats In Bangkok
My journey began at the Sathon Pier where I took the orange Bangkok River Boat which cost only 15 baht. If you use the river boat at Sathon PIer, go to the left hand side of the overhead bridge and ignore anyone trying to persuade you to use the tourist ferry which cost 100 baht. You need to go to the desk selling the orange boat tickets.
You should not have to wait too long for a boat as they leave every every 15 minutes. Give yourself plenty of time though as they do sometimes get full. Take the river boat all the way up to Thornburi pier and then walk for about 10 minutes to the train station.
Bangkok To Kanchanaburi Train
There are 2 trains a day leave Bangkok to Kanchanaburi; one at 0750 and the one we caught at 1355. At weekends, I believe there are extra trains. The journey is scheduled to take just over two-and-a-half hours. The trains are third-class and cost only 100 baht (single). There is no real need to book in advance as the trains never sell out.
Always check local timetables before you plan your journey.
The trains are comfortable enough, though it does get quite chilly as every single window is open. That’s third-class air-conditioning for you! Vendors regularly walk up and down the train selling drinks and snacks and there are toilets on the train. The trains are very noisy so don’t expect to get any sleep!
