Taiping is a historic city in the Perak region of Malaysia. Often missed by travellers, it is definitely interesting enough to add to your travel plans. These are the best hostels in Taiping.

After spending almost two weeks in George Town at the halfway point of our year-long travels, we were back on the move. We were heading towards Cameron Highlands via Ipoh. Our research had showed that Taiping might be an interesting place to visit to break up the journey.

There were no direct buses from Butterworth so we had to take a bus to Kamunting and continue our journey by taxi.

Arriving In Kamunting

At the Kamunting bus station, there were plenty of taxis waiting to take us but instead we called a Grab as they are always cheaper and never rip you off.

Typing in the name of our hotel into the Grab app was when I realised that there were two hotels with the same name and the one we had booked into was not the one in the city centre. Instead, our hotel was located around on the main road that connects Kamunting to Taiping. A 45 minute walk to the city centre. Oops!

These are some of the best budget hostels in Taiping, according to user reviews. These are affiliate links to the Agoda web site. I found Agoda to be much better than booking.com in Southeast Asia. I receive a small amount for any bookings made through these links at no extra cost to you.

Kilmal Hotel

Finding out our hotel was way out of the centre was not the best start to our time in Taiping. Thankfully, there were many shops and restaurants around the hotel. There was even a big mall with a cinema. We already knew that Grab operated in the area and we were only here 2 nights so we quickly put aside any disappointment.

‘Kimal Hotel’ (map) was one of two hotels we considered in Taiping. Had we known THIS Kimal was out of the centre, we would probably have chosen the other option. Having said that, the room was very nice. It was clean and, despite not having any windows in the bedroom, it felt quite light. The bathroom was big and very comfortable with a great shower. Unfortunately, the WiFi was awful. Some reviews had said they could not connect at all and this was the case for most of the duration of our stay. We informed the reception who said they would check the router but we knew nothing would come of it. WiFi is really important for any traveller and they need to improve this service as it will definitely put people off staying.
