Phnom Penh was our first destination in Cambodia after travelling by bus through the Vietnam-Cambodia border. If you are travelling by bus into Cambodia, expect to be scammed.
The city seemed much different to previous capital cities in Southeast Asia that we had visited. It seemed quite rough and rundown on first impressions. Our hostel was on the edge of the centre so we experienced a less touristy experience.

Nice Guesthouse
As you would imagine in a capital city, there is accommodation here to suit all budgets. We struggled to find a place that was within what we like to pay (£10 a night for double room, preferably with en suite bathroom) so we had to pay a little more for a place that was just a little out of the centre. The imaginatively named ‘Nice Guesthouse’ (map) offered clean and comfortable rooms with a decent shower. The staff were friendly and always greeted us with a warm welcome. Unfortunately, the WiFi for me was virtually non-existent. I could not connect on both my laptop nor my phone. It was better for Joanna but only just. Having good WiFi is one of the most important things for the modern traveller and this was as bad as it had ever been on our travels so far.
Despite this, the guesthouse was nice enough. It was a little out of the centre which was reflected in the lower price.
