Ho Chi Minh is a popular destination for backpackers and there is accommodation to suit every budget. These are the best hostels in Ho Chi Minh.
Ho Chi Minh was our last stop in Vietnam, having spent one month travelling down the coast from Hanoi. From here, we would be moving on to Cambodia. We were in Ho Chi Minh for the Chinese New Year. This meant that the city was actually quieter than it usuallly is. You would never have guessed!

Van Hung Hotel
We struggled to find a room in the city centre within our budget that didn’t look grim. In the end, we paid a little bit more than usual for a very basic room with en-suite bathroom that was located within ten minutes walk of ‘backpacker street’. ‘Van Hung Hotel’ (map) was located down the kind of alley that we might have been a little nervous about at the start of our travels. We soon realised that these side alleys were as busy as anywhere else in the city and were, for the most part, very safe.
The room was basic, if a little dusty. The WiFi was good, the bed seemed clean and the shower worked, which were the most important things.
We had a decent stay at this hostel which was actually in a great location. It was quiet but not far from backpacker street, meaning it waas easy to get anywhere in the city.
The owners of this family-run business were very welcoming, despite not speaking any English. The owner gave us a beer each for the new year and then gave us a soft drink the next night too. We did find a cockroach in our room, which scuttled under the bed. On further investigation, we discovered a mini cockroach graveyard. But hey, that’s Vietnam!
