Nong Khai was our final destination in Thailand before moving to Laos. Most travellers to this city are either heading to, or coming from, the capital city of Laos, Vientiane.

Mut Mee Garden Guest House Nong Khai
We booked a stay at Mut Mee Garden Guest House (map). We arrived after the check-in time, so it was a bit annoying to discover our rooms were not ready yet. We were told to sit and wait in the gardens and we could have a drink. I felt we should have been given a drink being as we were being made to wait. I didn’t fancy paying for an instant coffee. Thankfully, Joanna had come prepared with an aeropress and a coffee grinder for moments like these so we took advantage of the free hot water and had a nice coffee whilst we waited.
I also had an explore around the grounds of the guesthouse, which were very impressive. The guesthouse is much bigger than on first impressions and it is almost like a small community. It has its own book store, yoga classes and massage parlour. It seemed to attract an older clientele, meaning that it was very quiet. It is located right on the Mekong river so you can sit in the garden, enjoy a drink and look across the river towards Laos.
After a very detailed description of what to do in the town from a guy called ‘Chilli’, we finally gained access to our room. We paid for the cheapest private room and it showed. The room was indeed basic but the beds did come with mosquito nets. It would have been nice if the windows and doors didn’t have gaps to let the pesky things in, though. We shared a bathroom with only one other room, which was a nice surprise. It was here where the mosquitoes really gathered. Each time I had a shower, I must have killed double figures of the blighters!
We warmed to the place after a slightly annoying start. We met the owner and he was very friendly. The room was fine and we didn’t get anywhere near the amount of bites we were expecting. It’s a great location too so I would definitely recommend it. We had a bit of a problem checking out when the woman on reception followed us out and asked if we’d paid. Apart from the check-in/out situation, we enjoyed our stay here.
