Where To Stay In Hanoi

The Hoan Kiem district, also known as the Old Quarter, is the heart of Hanoi. You can find many places here that offer decent accommodation at low prices.

These are some of the best budget hostels in Hanoi, according to user reviews. These are affiliate links to the Agoda web site. I found Agoda to be much better than booking.com in Southeast Asia. I receive a small amount for any bookings made through these links at no extra cost to you.

North Hostel N.2, Hanoi Old Quarter

Despite there being many Hanoi hostels to choose from, there were also a number of cheap guesthouses available. We decided to stay at ‘North Hostel N.2’ (map). Our decision was based on its location in Hanoi Old Quarter for the best price, with the best reviews. We paid 1,608,020 Dong for five nights in a double room with bathroom.

If Hanoi was a big change from Luang Prabang, the same could be said of this hostel. Our previous place was spotless and even had a swimming pool! North Hostel was on a grubby side-street and felt like we were staying in someone’s spare room. The furniture was old and made of solid wood; you would have expected to see it in an antique store, not a hostel.

We were not immediately won over by its charm and its strange shaped bathroom. I’ll be honest; I was wondering why we’d chosen the place! However, over the course of five nights, we came to really enjoy staying there. The staff always greeted us with a smile and a hello and the room suited us just fine. Everything worked, including the WiFi, which was surprisingly strong considering we were on the fifth floor of a very old building.

The owner of the hostel got in touch with us after to thank us for staying and to wish us all the best on our future travels. This was not an automated email as he mentioned the places we were heading too. I replied to the email and he replied back; again thanking us for our custom and wishing us all the best. It was one of the warmest interactions we had with any hostel owner on our travels.

I can not recommend this place highly enough. It’s not modern. It’s not the best looking hostel, either. But it is a fantastic place to stay in Hanoi.
