After spending some time in mainland Malaysia, our next adventure was the Malaysian part of Borneo. We took a flight from Kuala Lumpur to the city of Kota Kinabalu from where we planned to travel to the east coast via Mount Kinabalu.

OYO Hotel Franchise

There wasn’t a great deal within our budget in Kota Kinabalu and the places that were didn’t look too appealing. We kept coming across this ‘OYO’ name throughout our recent travels and they had rooms available in various locations in Kota Kinabula.

OYO is an Indian company that have recently branched out into Malaysia. They work with mom-and-pop hotels and give them the kind of exposure and branding normally associated with the bigger hotel chains.

OYO 699 Plaza Hotel

We booked a room at ‘OYO 699 Plaza Hotel’ (map). It was ideally located and was cheap. We booked a double room with en-suite bathroom.

Check-in was easy and quick and no deposit was required. The room seemed old but it was clean and everything worked fine. Rooms were cleaned by request and the WiFi worked well.

We had a good stay here and would recommend it to people wanting to stay in the heart of the city on a small budget.
