Arriving in Udon Thani

We took the bus from the new bus station in Khon Kaen. The journey was about an hour and the bus was to take us into the main bus station in Udon Thani. However, the bus was passing our hostel on the edge of the centre so we managed to get dropped off nearby. You can do that in Thailand. Ask the coach driver to drop you anywhere and they will more than likely be happy to oblige.

These are some of the best budget hostels in Udon Thani, according to user reviews. These are affiliate links to the Agoda web site. I found Agoda to be much better than booking.com in Southeast Asia. I receive a small amount for any bookings made through these links at no extra cost to you.

Chanathinat Place Udon Thani

Our hostel, ‘Chanathinat Place’ (map) was on a lively street with plenty of street food options. We had problems finding it at first. Google Maps told us we had found our location but we could not see a sign in English anywhere. We had narrowed it down to two buildings when a woman came from inside one of the buildings to inform us that we had found our hostel.

Check-in was easy, though once we reached our room I realised that I had been paid 100 baht less in change. I returned to the reception and the woman was already waiting with the money in her hand. I wasn’t sure what to make of that.

The room was fine. It was very dated but pretty clean and the bed seemed comfy, the bathroom was functional and the WiFi was good. These were pretty much our only requirements of a hostel. Anything else was a bonus. There didn’t seem to be a social area but, as we were only there for two days, that didn’t bother us. We did have a balcony and a fridge!

The hostel is about a 10 minute walk from the centre of the city. As mentioned, there are many food options nearby, some coffee shops and a 7-Eleven and Tesco.  If you are spending a couple of days in Udon Thani and are on a tight budget, this is a decent option.
