We travelled from Luang Prabang for our first visit to Nong Khiaw. We then headed further north to Muang Ngoy where we saw in the new year. We then returned to Nong Khiaw. Though small, Nong Khiaw is a beautiful town and became one of my favourite places on our trip.

Meexai Guesthouse

As we were trying to travel as cheaply as possible, we were always looking for cheap hostels. There are a number of places offering cheap accommodation in Nong Khiaw. We chose to stay at a place called ‘Meexai Guesthouse’ (map).

We were placed in a room on the ground floor for the first night and told we had to move for our second night. This was slightly annoying until we realised that the rooms on the upper floors were better and had nicer views. If you book here, request a room on the upper floors!

Each room had its own patio area with outdoor power points so we could sit outside and use our devices. It was also a nice area to relax and enjoy a beer in the evening.

The rooms were basic but clean and a good size. The showers were not the greatest but they did work after a bit of encouragement. More importantly, the WiFi was good. Good enough to download a movie (though not strong enough to stream).

We loved our stay here; so much so that we booked to stay again on our second visit to the town. We even got a cheaper price by booking in person and not using booking.com. The staff were friendly and it had a real community feel to it. I definitely recommend it.
