Malacca is a charming city that is a popular choice for travellers moving between Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. These are the best hostels in Malacca.

Malacca is easily reachable from Kuala Lumpur as the two cities are connected by regular buses. It has a very relaxed atmosphere and is the perfect escape from the skyscrapers and nightlife of Malaysia’s capital city.

These are some of the best budget hostels in Malacca, according to user reviews. These are affiliate links to the Agoda web site. I found Agoda to be much better than booking.com in Southeast Asia. I receive a small amount for any bookings made through these links at no extra cost to you.

The Paradise

Our research showed that ‘Jonker Street’ is at the heart of the main tourist area so we looked for accommodation that was nearby. There were three possibilities but in the end we chose to stay at ‘The Paradise’ (map).

Though it is only a 5 minute walk to ‘Jonker Street’, it is located in a residential area. There are many restaurants nearby.

On arrival, we didn’t get off to the best start as we couldn’t get in! The property is surrounded by security gates and there was no buzzer or any other way to alert them of our arrival. After about 10 minutes, I opened the booking.com app to contact them and spotted a message that contained all the info we needed on arrival. The keys were in a letterbox next to one of the security gates.

The garden area was very nice and had a table and chairs with an electric fan overhead. This would come in handy later when I was updating my blog.

Inside was a reception area leading into a lounge. There was a TV and DVD player for guests to use.

There was also a kitchen area with a fridge-freezer and kitchen utensils and a kettle that were free to use. Guests were not allowed to cook however. I feel a toaster and a microwave would be useful here. However, there was a washer that was free to use and included free detergent! This was VERY useful as it was so hot and we were sweating through our clothes at a speedy rate!

This was all looking very nice! We got into our room and thankfully, the standards didn’t drop. There was plenty of wardrobe space and the beds were big and comfy. They even shaped the towels into swans 🙂

There was only one plug in the entire room and that was located halfway up the wall so recharging toothbrushes and phones was difficult but we just used the plugs in the lounge area.

So far, we were very impressed with ‘The Paradise’ and we had yet to discover what awaited us in the bathroom. We entered into a fairly standard bathroom but with one special addition… A BATH! We hadn’t had access to a bath since Vietnam over three months previously. It was small and the water wasn’t very hot, but it was still a bath!

Overall, this was an excellent place to stay. It exceeded our expectations and was one of the most enjoyable accommodations on our whole trip. There was no-one else staying in the house during our stay so we had the whole place to ourselves. If there had been others staying, that would have been fine as the house has communal areas in which to make new friends. Highly recommended.

We paid £50 for 4 nights (double room with en-suite bathroom).
